Simon Fraser University (SFU) is a public research university in British Columbia, Canada, with three campuses, all Greater Vancouver: Burnaby (main campus), Surrey, and Vancouver.
Simon Fraser University was established as a result of the recommendations of a 1962 report by John B. Macdonald entitled A Plan for Higher Education and the Future in British Columbia. He recommended the establishment of a new university in the Lower continental Plains, and the British Columbia legislature formally approved the establishment of a university in Burnaby on March 1, 1963. The university is named after Simon Fraser, a fur trader and explorer of the North West Company. The original name of the school was Fraser University, but the initial "FU" was changed because it evoked the colloquialism "fuck you". In May of that year, Gordon M. Shrum was named the university's first president. From the various places offered, Shrum suggested to the provincial government that Burnaby Mountain, 365 meters above sea level, should be the new university. Architects Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey won a university design competition and construction began in the spring of 1964. The campus faces northwest and is located above Burrard Inlet. Eighteen months later, on September 9, 1965, the university began its first semester with 2,500 students.
SFU also offers non-credit courses and courses for adult students. As of 2016, SFU Continuing Studies offers more than 300 courses and 27 certificate and diploma programs, most of which are offered online or part-time at SFU downtown Vancouver or Surrey Campus. Continuing Studies also runs a part-time degree completion program called SFU NOW: Nights or Weekends for working adults pursuing a bachelor's degree.
